On February 14, 2018, Nikolas Cruz killed seventeen students and staff, and wounded fourteen others at the Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. On October 1, 2017, Stephen Paddock opened fire on a crowd of outdoor concert attendees from a window on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Over the course of about 10 minutes, Paddock killed nearly sixty people and wounded over 500. This shooting is to date the largest mass shooting by a lone gunman in U.S. history. In 2016 the city of Chicago sustained 762 murders. This represents a fifty-seven percent increase from the previous year. If nothing else, these facts tell us that America has a big violence problem.

We need to stem the tide of against the loss of precious and innocent lives, and not only the lives of those who are innocent. We need to work to give new meaning and purpose to the lives of those people who take control by picking up a gun. Far too many people on both sides of the gun are losing their lives.
